Torus hires Maza for US liability business

TORUS has hired Alex Maza to oversee its US management liability business as it attempts to build its offering for public and private entities in the US.

Maza will be based in New Jersey and will report to Dermot O’Donohoe, chief underwriting officer of Torus’ Global Specialty. He has spent the last 11 years at Zurich North America, where he most recently served as senior vice president within its strategic risk solutions group.

Torus said its management liability group will initially offer direcrors’ and officers’, employment practices, fiduciary and fidelity liability products.

The insurer said plans are in place to offer professional indemnity as well as private equity and financial institution coverage on a selective basis.

The appointment is the latest in a series of US hires as Torus continues its expansive strategy.

Earlier this month the insurer opened an office in San Francisco, hiring Kim Kihara from Marsh and Eleanor Howell from Willis as vice presidents of property and casualty respectively.

Carl Groth, formerly with Deloitte’s US insurance enterprise risk management practice, joined as group chief risk officer, based in the New Jersey office.

In January, Torus announced it was entering the healthcare sector and hired Bob Allen as US head of healthcare, again based in New Jersey.

The New Jersey office is also home to Torus’ renewable energy team, which was announced at the start of January with the hiring of Angie Adams, Adam Newman and Wayne Jacobson.
